Deputy Director of Centennial Campaign

The ACLU Foundation of Southern California (“ACLU SoCal”) is in the quiet phase of a Centennial Campaign with a nationwide $1.25 billion comprehensive campaign goal. ACLU SoCal is searching for a seasoned fundraising professional at this critical time of the campaign, with nearly 50% of funds raised towards the Southern California goal of $88 million in outright and planned gifts before 2020.
The deputy director of the Centennial Campaign will work closely with the executive director, director of philanthropy and national ACLU staff to build on this effort with a focus on utilizing the campaign to secure both increased annual gifts and special transformational gifts. The structure and ambitions for the campaign are established with programmatic goals that are achievable by 2020, on the issues of voting rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, immigrants’ rights, criminal justice reform, education equity and economic justice.
The deputy director of the Centennial Campaign will spend a majority of time in direct interaction with donors, both in and out of the office, helping donors fulfill their passions and interests through their giving to the ACLU SoCal as well as time behind the scenes, assessing next steps for individual donor engagement, deploying other staff including the executive director and director of philanthropy, as necessary for building the donor relationship with the ACLU SoCal. This position both leads and supports others in leading. The position will also work on the public launch of the campaign including materials, naming opportunities and media work.
The deputy director of the Centennial Campaign reports directly to the director of philanthropy. This exempt position is based in Los Angeles.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Portfolio Management and Donor Stewardship
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 130-150 donors and prospects that research shows are qualified for $50,000+ gifts.
  • Create individual goals for each person in the portfolio based on the donor’s history of giving and the organization’s knowledge of that donor’s potential and interests.
  • Create a comprehensive plan for each donor/prospect in the portfolio and execute that plan so that individual donors are retained and upgraded.
  • Directly solicit major and planned gifts, and partner with senior and program staff on donor engagement opportunities.
  • Provide executive-level support to senior staff in preparation for solicitation or stewardship opportunities, including appropriate, concise briefing materials in advance of meetings with donors and prospects.
  • Facilitate solicitations for the executive director and director of philanthropy as appropriate.
  • Qualify new prospects for assignment to the campaign portfolio on quarterly basis using shared research tools and reports.
  • Work with the appropriate staff to secure project information and use this information to develop materials directed at individual donors/prospects, such as highly personalized proposals that are in line with donor interests and programmatic priorities, stewardship reports that detail progress made as a result of a particular gift, etc.
  • Develop and execute special cultivation and stewardship opportunities, such as small events for select donors/prospects in the portfolio.
  • Maintain working knowledge of national programmatic priorities and issues as they occur.
Campaign Coordination and Facilitation
  • Collaborate with the national office and campaign staff across country to maximize opportunities presented through national work on the overall campaign.
  • Lead planning for public launch of the campaign, anticipated in 2018, including collaboration with other departments such as communications and strategic partnerships and marketing to maximize impact of public launch and help set the stage for the close of campaign.
  • Lead donor options for naming opportunity, recognition and benefits.
  • Prepare personalized proposals for individual prospects and write cultivation and solicitation correspondence.
  • Update existing financial tracking system for all campaign contributions.
  • Ensure that campaign donors receive timely and accurate reports on the use of their gifts and campaign progress.
  • Produce reports, analyze results and make recommendations related to strategies for growing program revenue.
  • Create donor strategy memos, letters, emails and other related pieces for donors, prospects, program staff and others.
  • Organize and support the training of board members and other prominent supporters who will provide critical leadership to the campaign.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant experience in nonprofit fundraising, with progressive responsibility and a proven track record of soliciting, closing and stewarding major gifts in the $10,000-$100,000 range. Experience soliciting seven-figure gifts is highly desirable and experience with planned gifts is also preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication and presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to simplify complex themes and activities into a short, compelling presentation or written piece. Familiarity with talking about utilizing litigation to promote social justice is helpful.
  • Strong people skills. Effective interpersonal and communication abilities. Ability to “lead through others” and gracefully exact excellence from them; persuasiveness and perseverance in attaining goals. The ability to communicate effectively and respectfully on the phone and in person with donors, board members, volunteers, staff and the general public.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and to meet deadlines. Ability to develop long-term plans, set objectives and track progress towards achieving objectives. Familiarity with moves management preferred.
  • A confident and professional work style. Ability to work independently and take initiative and exercise good judgment in stressful circumstances. Flexibility and a willingness to take on new tasks as the responsibilities of the position evolve.
  • Experience with donor database management and systems to track campaigns and ensure complete, secure and private donor and campaign records.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the ACLU’s mission and principles
  • Proficiency with donor databases and office technology and information systems (including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Must be available for travel throughout Southern California with reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work occasional overtime or irregular hours.
