This is a 2-year temporary position.
As a partner in the creation and dissemination of knowledge, the Collections, Research and Instructional Services (CRIS) Department of the Charles E. Young Research Library supports the UCLA community by selecting the resources and providing the services necessary for world class research and instruction. The department is home to subject specialists in the humanities and social sciences, including area studies, government information, and cartographic resources. These subject specialists serve as liaisons to academic departments, research units and inter-disciplinary programs in their areas of responsibility, partnering with faculty and students on a wide variety of research projects and teaching initiatives. CRIS librarians and support staff serve the faculty and students in these disciplines by cultivating research-level collections in a variety of formats, as well as providing high-level research services, in person, via e-mail, and digital reference. CRIS librarians actively participate in UCLA Library’s Teaching and Learning Services, taking the lead in the design and delivery of specialized instruction sessions for upper-division/graduate level courses.
Position Duties
Reporting to the Interim Head of CRIS, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties.  All Social Sciences and Humanities librarians are responsible for reference service, information literacy instruction and outreach to faculty, staff, and students. In addition, librarians have coordinating or functional responsibility for specific areas. Specific duties include the following:
Research Support Services
  • Serves as library liaison to English and History departments.
  • Provides in-depth reference services, both in-person and virtually.
  • With other librarians, participates in training, supervising, and evaluating graduate student reference assistants.
Library Instruction
  • Works with library colleagues to design, develop, deliver, and assess outreach and instructional services to faculty, teaching assistants, undergraduates, graduate students, staff, and others to support the discovery and effective, efficient, and ethical use of research resources and tools.
  • Works closely with instructors to design, develop, and provide course-related/course-integrated instruction to upper-division undergraduates and graduate students.
  • Helps other instructors learn how to provide course-related/course-integrated information literacy instruction on their own.
As Subject Specialist Librarian:
  • Works with instructors and students in assigned departments (English and History) to determine collection priorities.
  • Provides input and information to CRIS department collection manager, especially in regards to the English-language approval plan and its parameters.
  • Works with the Collection Manager to manage endowed funds related to English and History.
  • Works with the Associate University Librarian for Collection Management and Scholarly Communication to determine major purchase priorities and funding for assigned disciplines.
  • Contributes to projects and initiatives in the department as needed and collaborates with other units on collection development projects.
